View on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | Tumblr | Mastodon | BlueskyThe novelization for #TheEmpireStrikesBack written by Donald F. Glut was published on this day in 1980
Based on the story by George Lucas and the screenplay by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, it's a little different and shorter
The author notes Boba Fett as having a black-marked silver helmet, which might stem from the evolution of the all-white "prototype" armor and how we ended up with the silver-armored Ben Cooper costume for kids, versus his look in his first film
Also, this book may be the first mention of "Slave I" in published writing, as it was previously written out on concept art as "Boba Fett's ship"

View on Instagram | Facebook | TwitterHappy birthday to sound designer Ben Burtt!
"To complete the sound effect [of Slave I], Burtt added a delay which would create an audio black hole before the twang of the sonic weapon. This was inspired by real life lightning that you often see before hearing the thunder. The source of the twang itself remains unknown and is something that Burtt prefers to keep a secret. Because it is such an unprecedented thing to have an absence of sound in a movie, the technicians who evaluated the film said that there was an audio problem with the reel which needed to be fixed." -- StarWars.com

"To create the sound for the Slave I, Ben Burtt did what he always did whenever he had to create a sound for a spaceship: look at how the ship was designed, how it looked like, how fast it would move, and what it could do. For the takeoff sound of the Slave I, Burtt combined a trumpet's whine with the horn of his own 1971 Dodge Duster while it was on a desert road." -- StarWars.com

View on Instagram#FettFriday: Concept art for #BobaFett's ship, Slave I, sketched in 1979 by Nilo Rodis-Jamero, who was instrumental in its design.
Nilo was the assistant art director and visual effects creator on "The Empire Strikes Back" and costume designer on "Return of the Jedi." This sketch was most recently re-published in "The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" (2010).
"Joe Johnston showed me some of the ideas he had for Boba Fett, and I remember asking myself what his spaceship would look like. I remember seeing a radar dish and stopping to sketch it very quickly to see if I could get something out of it. The original design I had was round, but when you looked at it from the side, it became elliptical. For some reason, when I drew it, George thought it was elliptical, so that's what it became. When we were building the ship at ILM, somebody looked at street lamps and pointed out that they look like Boba's ship. So everyone began to think that was where I got the idea for the design."

Then he added #BobaFett in the foreground and considered adding Slave I to the background. "But after I started to add lights to the scene, I felt the picture would be more dynamic if I surrounded it in steam with its main focal point being Han Solo together with Fett," the artist told us in an interview.
