Ten years before "War of the Bounty Hunters Alpha #1" was published, artist Robert Shane came up with this all-black variant look for #JangoFett

Robert's statement on his DeviantArt post from 2011: "The design of Jango (and Boba) Fett's armour is a classic - but I decided to draw Jango in 'stealth mode' here because I wanted to see how cool I could make him look in black armour. I haven't seen this concept done before - but I think it works work well and makes an eye-catching image. I thought this might be how he could have looked in the 'Attack of the Clones' movie when he assassinated Zam Wessel on Coruscant - perhaps using a variation of his armour for when he needed to creep around! This is an entirely original depiction of the character - first drawn in pencil, then scanned in and coloured in Photoshop using a Wacom tablet."

Happy birthday to sound designer Ben Burtt!

"To complete the sound effect [of Slave I], Burtt added a delay which would create an audio black hole before the twang of the sonic weapon. This was inspired by real life lightning that you often see before hearing the thunder. The source of the twang itself remains unknown and is something that Burtt prefers to keep a secret. Because it is such an unprecedented thing to have an absence of sound in a movie, the technicians who evaluated the film said that there was an audio problem with the reel which needed to be fixed." -- StarWars.com

Happy birthday Joe Johnston!

"Johnston is #BobaFett's original conceptual designer. He has also been referred to as the 'father' of Boba Fett. Joe designed the colors and helmet for Boba. John Mollo had designed the original suit as the super trooper army of millions, but the production couldn't afford it for 'Empire Strikes Back.' Therefore, Joe made Boba a singular character with the paint job he did on him, including the damaged suit and helmet." – Joe Johnston's website (now offline, quote saved on bobafett.com)

This official "pitch" painting by Lucasfilm concept designer Brian Matyas helped seal the deal with Disney to green-light "#TheMandalorian."

Earlier this month, the artist shared that Dave Filoni needed a "sketch of a small Yoda creature being presented to a group of Mandalorians."

Due to the quick turn-around, Brian used Daz 3D for composition and then his Hot Toys 1/4 scale #BobaFett as a base to paint on top. Doug Chiang was also involved early in the process.

Happy birthday Joe Johnston!

Born on this day in 1950, and credited as art director of visual effects on The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Johnston was #BobaFett's original designer.

Since then, Johnston has been a major motion picture director, helming films like Captain America: The First Avenger and The Rocketeer.

#ThisDayInHistory: Ben Burtt, responsible for the sound effects of #BobaFett and his ship, was born on this day in 1948.

"To create the sound for the Slave I, Ben Burtt did what he always did whenever he had to create a sound for a spaceship: look at how the ship was designed, how it looked like, how fast it would move, and what it could do. For the takeoff sound of the Slave I, Burtt combined a trumpet's whine with the horn of his own 1971 Dodge Duster while it was on a desert road." -- StarWars.com

The 2017 LEGO Desert Skiff Escape (right) set was looking mostly like a do-over of the 2012 Desert Skiff set, but the #BobaFett minifigure appears to have a bunch of "Return of the Jedi" updates: increased armor damage, grey flight suit, yellow gloves/hands, and re-designed ammo belt.

Other observations: it's got the same generation of printing as the 2015 UCS Fett, and we'll have to keep on dreaming for that "Jedi" jetpack to have the proper colors.

From the sketchbook of Joe Johnson, here is #BobaFett on his modified speeder bike ready to hunt down his quarry.

This work was shared in 2013 by the Boba Fett designer, acclaimed director, and long-time fine artist for an auction benefitting Shine On Sierra Leone. It raised $760.

#FettFriday: Joe Johnston's Sketches in the "Empire Strikes Back Sketchbook" (1980)

Excerpt: "While most of the film's costume design originated in England, Ralph McQuarrie and [Joe] Johnston designed the Boba Fett outfit at Industrial Light and Magic in California. The costume was built at EMI in London, and then shipped back to Johnston to be painted. Originally the Boba Fett costume was intended to be worn by a squad of supercommandos, troops from the Mandalore system armed with weapons built into their suits. But the costume was adapted for the Boba Fett character by aging, denting, and adding a colorful paint job to one of these suits, while keeping the wrist lasers, flying backpack, and rocket darts originally intended for the supercommandos." #

#FettFriday: Concept art for #BobaFett's ship, Slave I, sketched in 1979 by Nilo Rodis-Jamero, who was instrumental in its design.

Nilo was the assistant art director and visual effects creator on "The Empire Strikes Back" and costume designer on "Return of the Jedi." This sketch was most recently re-published in "The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" (2010).

"Joe Johnston showed me some of the ideas he had for Boba Fett, and I remember asking myself what his spaceship would look like. I remember seeing a radar dish and stopping to sketch it very quickly to see if I could get something out of it. The original design I had was round, but when you looked at it from the side, it became elliptical. For some reason, when I drew it, George thought it was elliptical, so that's what it became. When we were building the ship at ILM, somebody looked at street lamps and pointed out that they look like Boba's ship. So everyone began to think that was where I got the idea for the design."

Joe Johnston, who celebrates his birthday today, designed #BobaFett: "I designed the final version of Boba Fett. Ralph and I both worked together on preliminary designs, and we traded ideas back and forth. Originally, Boba Fett was part of a force we called Super Troopers, and they were these really high-tech fighting units, and they all looked alike. That eventually evolved into a single bounty hunter. I painted Boba's outfit and tried to make it look like it was made of different pieces of armor. It was a symmetrical design, but I painted it in such a way that it looked like he had scavenged parts and had done some personalizing of his costume; he had little trophies hanging from his belt, and he had little braids of hair, almost like a collection of scalps." -- #StarWars: The Annotated Screenplays

For more behind-the-scenes photos and references of just the "dented" helmet, visit this album within our costume guide gallery:
