Ease Owyeung

Lorne Peterson

Ease Owyeung with an original Slave I miniature cockpit and model

"[Model Maker] Ease Owyeung built the ship, including the inner cockpit detailing. His early iterations had a second bank of seats for Fett's underlings -- early sketches by McQuarrie had the pig-like Ugnaught guards actually working for Fett instead of being Cloud City laborers as in the finished film. As the story developed, Fett was defined as a loner and these support-crew seats disappeared." – Lorne Peterson, in his book Sculpting a Galaxy: Inside the Star Wars Model Shop

Joe Johnston

Happy birthday Joe Johnston!

"All of the details of #BobaFett’s costume were invented by Johnston – the wheat insignia on his chest, the braid of hair (later said to be Wookiee hair), the skull. 'I made all that stuff up,' Johnston said [to The Wrap in 2021]. 'Because I figured, let's make him mysterious. Let's not use anything we’ve seen before. And I had names for all that stuff. Most of them I’ve forgotten. But that wheat thing is called the Venom Vine. And on one of his shoulder pads he's got, it's like a skull of some creature. That's all just out of nowhere.' After George told him to 'make him look cool,' he was hands off. (Johnston thinks that he was either in the UK or busy working on the screenplay for 'The Empire Strikes Back.')"

The novelization for #TheEmpireStrikesBack written by Donald F. Glut was published on this day in 1980

Based on the story by George Lucas and the screenplay by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, it's a little different and shorter

The author notes Boba Fett as having a black-marked silver helmet, which might stem from the evolution of the all-white "prototype" armor and how we ended up with the silver-armored Ben Cooper costume for kids, versus his look in his first film

Also, this book may be the first mention of "Slave I" in published writing, as it was previously written out on concept art as "Boba Fett's ship"

"The Daimyo of Mos Espa" by Brad Hudson is a Star Wars Celebration Japan exclusive

Artist statement published yesterday by the official Star Wars website: "My work for the 2025 Celebration is inspired by The Book of Boba Fett and by Fett's first appearance in Marvel Comics. Boba debuted in Star Wars issue #42. 77¥ is the approximate conversion of the original cover price, 50¢. I wanted to include Japanese characters, and I moved the traditional corner box to the right as an homage to Japanese manga. I also used a halftone coloring system to further connect to manga aesthetics and to make a nostalgic reference to early comic printing processes."
