Happy birthday Joe Johnston!

"All of the details of #BobaFett’s costume were invented by Johnston – the wheat insignia on his chest, the braid of hair (later said to be Wookiee hair), the skull. 'I made all that stuff up,' Johnston said [to The Wrap in 2021]. 'Because I figured, let's make him mysterious. Let's not use anything we’ve seen before. And I had names for all that stuff. Most of them I’ve forgotten. But that wheat thing is called the Venom Vine. And on one of his shoulder pads he's got, it's like a skull of some creature. That's all just out of nowhere.' After George told him to 'make him look cool,' he was hands off. (Johnston thinks that he was either in the UK or busy working on the screenplay for 'The Empire Strikes Back.')"

The novelization for #TheEmpireStrikesBack written by Donald F. Glut was published on this day in 1980

Based on the story by George Lucas and the screenplay by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, it's a little different and shorter

The author notes Boba Fett as having a black-marked silver helmet, which might stem from the evolution of the all-white "prototype" armor and how we ended up with the silver-armored Ben Cooper costume for kids, versus his look in his first film

Also, this book may be the first mention of "Slave I" in published writing, as it was previously written out on concept art as "Boba Fett's ship"

In the 4th and 5th drafts of "The Empire Strikes Back," #BobaFett had a different reply to #DarthVader:

BOBA (a very tough customer): I am in no hurry, Lord Vader. My concern is that Captain Solo not be damaged. The reward from Jabba the Hutt pays double if he's alive.

#ThrowbackThursday: #BobaFett in #TheEmpireStrikesBack. "INT. CLOUD CITY - PRISON ENTRY AREA

Darth Vader strides through the room as two stormtroopers prepare an elaborate torture mechanism. Han is strapped to a rack which tilts forward onto the torture device. Vader activates the mechanism, creating two bursts of sparks, one of which strikes Han's face. The door opens, and Darth Vader moves to the holding chamber, where Lando and Boba Fett await him." An excerpt of #DarthVader first talking to #BobaFett in the #StarWars "The Empire Strikes Back" screenplay written by Lawrence Kasdan and Leigh Brackett from a story by George Lucas:

INT. VADER'S STAR DESTROYER - BRIDGE - CONTROL DECK

The group standing before Vader is a bizarre array of galactic fortune hunters: There is Bossk, a slimy, tentacled monster with two huge, bloodshot eyes in a soft baggy face; Zuckuss and Dengar, two battle-scarred, mangy human types; IG-88, a battered, tarnished chrome war droid; and Boba Fett, a man in a weapon-covered armored space suit.

VADER: ...there will be a substantial reward for the one who finds the Millennium Falcon. You are free to use any methods necessary, but I want them alive. No disintegrations.

BOBA FETT: As you wish.

Joe Johnston, who celebrates his birthday today, designed #BobaFett: "I designed the final version of Boba Fett. Ralph and I both worked together on preliminary designs, and we traded ideas back and forth. Originally, Boba Fett was part of a force we called Super Troopers, and they were these really high-tech fighting units, and they all looked alike. That eventually evolved into a single bounty hunter. I painted Boba's outfit and tried to make it look like it was made of different pieces of armor. It was a symmetrical design, but I painted it in such a way that it looked like he had scavenged parts and had done some personalizing of his costume; he had little trophies hanging from his belt, and he had little braids of hair, almost like a collection of scalps." -- #StarWars: The Annotated Screenplays

An excerpt from the #StarWars Episode 5 screenplay written by Lawrence Kasdan and Leigh Brackett from a story by #GeorgeLucas: "As the Avenger Star Destroyer moves slowly into space, the hatch on its underbelly opens, sending a trail of junk behind it. Hidden among the refuse, the Falcon tumbles away. In the next moment, the Avenger roars off into hyperspace. The Falcon's engines are ignited, and it races off into the distance. Amidst the slowly drifting junk, Boba Fett's ship appears and moves after the Falcon." Nilo Rodis-Jamero is said to have designed #BobaFett's Slave I. Credited as an assistant art director and visual effects creator on #StarWars The Empire Strikes Back and costume designer on Return of the Jedi, Rodis-Jamero worked with Joe Johnston and subsequently #GeorgeLucas. Initially influenced by a radar dish, he is quoted about how it incorrectly became a "street lamp" inspiration in the book entitled "Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays." The sketch here was published in "The Art of Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back."
