The latest large-scale Star Wars video game, “Star Wars Outlaws,” is now available to those with early access (as of 9pm Pacific on this day for PC users), plus reviewers who snagged an even earlier copy. It’s available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.

(TLDR: jump to the spoiler — if you’re ready for it.)

Ubisoft describes the game on their official site as:

“Experience the first-ever open world Star Wars™ game, set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Explore distinct locations across the galaxy, both iconic and new. Risk it all as Kay Vess, a scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life, along with her companion Nix. Fight, steal, and outwit your way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates as you join the galaxy’s most wanted. … Live the high-stakes lifestyle of an outlaw. Turn any situation to your advantage with Nix by your side: fight with your blaster, overcome enemies with stealth and gadgets, or find the right moments to distract enemies and gain the upper hand.”

(There’s some controversy over it being called the first-ever open world Star Wars game. Your mileage may vary.)

You can have Kay Vess explore Tatooine and other places, much like “Uncharted” and other open world games. She has sidekick Nix and teams up with a droid named ND-5. It also has some neat side games like Sabacc and much more.

There’s an optional, additional Jabba the Hutt mission called “Jabba’s Gambit” that is just for Season Pass owners (aka Premium Edition) but just at launch. That’s not the only way to find Jabba, as confirmed by PC Gamer who recently spoke with Ubisoft about that:

“To clarify, Jabba the Hutt and the Hutt Cartel are one of the main syndicates in Star Wars Outlaws and will be part of the experience for everyone who purchases the game, regardless of edition,” a Ubisoft rep told us. “The ‘Jabba’s Gambit’ mission is an optional, additional mission with the Hutt Cartel along Kay and Nix’s journey across the Outer Rim. This mission will be available to those who purchase the season pass or an edition of the game which includes the season pass.”

But what about other characters? Last July on StarWars.com, Dan Brooks did a great interview with the creative team, asking our kind of question. “The setting to me is interesting — the time period between Empire and Jedi. You’ve got Boba Fett in play, all the bounty hunters that we meet in Empire, even some from the comics, like Doctor Aphra. You’ve got a lot to choose from. Might any of these characters pop up in the game?” Julian Gerighty replied, “[f]ans are going to have to play the game to see who might show up as a part of Kay’s story. I think Jabba’s the most obvious that we’ve featured.”

Now that the game has been released, fans have played through the game.

SPOILER ALERT

Jabba’s Palace

At least in “Jabba’s Gambit,” Kay can explore all sorts of areas in Jabba’s Palace. In one situation, you’re in the ventilation ducts and eavesdrop on Boba Fett talking to a hologram and bartender. Yup, Boba Fett is in Star Wars Outlaws. The rendering quality is almost 100% there, but for some reason they put his famous Mythosaur skull on the “wrong” shoulder.

Unlike “Jedi Survior,” which had Temuera Morrison reprise his voice role as modern Boba Fett, this scene is just seen from a distance without any lines.

A YouTuber named BabyZone captured the cameo, which you can see here in 4K:

Later in the cinematic cut scenes, you can see she comes across Han Solo in Carbonite.

Hunter’s Legacy

Coming later in Fall 2024, there will be a DLC (downloadable content) cosmetic bundles including one called “Hunter’s Legacy.” On the official promo graphic, it’s confirmed to be for her outfit, her sidekick Nix, her speeder, and her ship, which they’ve named Trailblazer.

Like A Bantha

One of the trophies you can get has a reference to Boba Fett’s line in “The Book of Boba Fett.” If you perform a perfect landing with the speeder, you get the “Like A Bantha” trophy.

Amban phase-pulse blaster

As seen first used by Boba Fett in the “Star Wars Holiday Special,” but popularized by Din Djarin in Season 1 of “The Mandalorian,” Kay can pick up and use an Amban phase-pulse blaster in the game.
