Overview

One of these sold for $33,750 via Heritage Auctions on May 4, 2025. Here was their description of it:

By the late 1970s, Star Wars had become more than a movie-it was a cultural supernova, igniting imaginations across the globe and forever changing the landscape of entertainment. For millions of fans, the adventure didn't end when the credits rolled; it lived on through Kenner's groundbreaking toy line, which transformed childhood play and launched an era of collecting that still thrives today. At the forefront of this golden age, Sears department stores played a pivotal role, offering exclusive figures, vehicles, and sets that were not offered elsewhere. These limited releases, often featuring unique characters and rare packaging variations, have become legendary among collectors. In 1979, following the success of their first exclusive 12-figure set, Sears Canada introduced a second milestone in Kenner's Star Wars legacy - the Sears Exclusive Special 9 Mini-Figure Set. This set not only continued the expansion of the galaxy's most celebrated toy line but also solidified Sears' reputation for delivering some of the most coveted Star Wars exclusives of the era.

This Sears Canada-exclusive set includes Snaggletooth, X-Wing Pilot Luke Skywalker, Power Droid, Death Star Droid, Greedo, Walrus Man, Hammerhead, R5-D4, and Boba Fett - a fantastic lineup featuring the next wave of fan-favorite characters. The figures remain factory-sealed, with Snaggletooth, Hammerhead, Walrus Man, and Greedo encased on SW 20A back cards, while X-Wing Pilot Luke Skywalker, Power Droid, R5-D4, and Boba Fett are sealed on SW 20B back cards. Each cardback features bilingual English and French text, a distinctive hallmark of Canadian releases.

The original outer box, showing handling wear along the edges and corners with its tape no longer present, remains a testament to this set's rarity and historical significance. Encased in acrylic and graded AFA Q-70 EX+, this extraordinary piece of Star Wars toy history is a truly rare and highly coveted collector's item. The "Q" grading, which stands for "Qualified," designates that while the box is no longer sealed, the carded figures inside are sealed as originally packaged. Additionally, an official certificate of authenticity from AFA is included. This is the only set that has ever been graded by AFA and includes one of the most desired figures in the line - Boba Fett on a Star Wars card. A true relic from the golden age of Star Wars merchandising, this set stands as a remarkable piece of Kenner and Sears' legendary partnership.
