One of the most popular Star Wars characters, he became very young orphan, seeing his father killed by Jedi master Mace Windu, and so grew up harboring personal hatred for the Jedi. Carbonite was a liquid substance that was made of carbon dioxide and could turn into a solid through rapid freezing. The goods could be wrapped in carbonite for preservation, through a process known as carbon freezing. Carbonite blocks could also be used to put people into hibernation. Prior to the invention of the hyperdrive, some early travelers used carbonite to endure long journeys. This technique, however, had brutal side effects, collectively referred to as hibernation disease.

During the Galactic Civil War, Darth Vader, intended to arrest his son Luke in carbonite. Having blackmailed Lando Calrissian into letting him use the carbon-free installation at Bespin, he tested the device on Han Solo. Boba Fett carried the carbonite block to Jabba's palace, where he displayed it as a trophy.
