According to POPULAR SCIENCE Magazine (June, 2006), Lucas was planning to release all six of the Star Wars movies in 3-D, starting with Episode 1 this spring, and one every year after that. Other rumors included IMAX 3-D releases as well.
After an exhaustive internet search for release dates yielded nothing but links to porn, I decided to post my question on STAR WARS.com... with the administrator redirecting my query to a general discussion of the 3-D topic wich had been ignored for some time.
According to Wikipedia, Lucas has never stated his intent to re-release the films in a 3-D format.
If this was just a rumor, then who started it? (So I can kick his *ss for getting my hopes up)
If it's true, then where do I score tickets? They'll sell out in seconds after a release date is announced and I can't miss out on this. (I'll beat up some kid in line and steal his ticket if I have to)
Help me, BFFC. You're my only hope.

I found an article on some site about how he was going to do the 3D thing, it was in late 2005 and said the movies would be in 3D and in theaters in summer/fall 2006.
I wouldn't trust anything that doesn't come directly from sw.com.

According to the POPULAR SCIENCE article (which was actually an interesting piece on the competing computer technologies being developed to convert any standard 2-D movies into 3-D format), Lucas was going to start with Episode 1 first, as apparently it takes about a year to convert a complete film into 3-D, done one frame at a time.
It sounds cool as hell, with the effect giving the illusion of depth into the screen as well as images floating outside of it. An example given to this effect was the Coruscant sky-lane traffic scenes being breathtaking. They also mentioned the ease of the latter Star Wars films undergoing the 3-D transfer process due to the amount of digital information used in filming them, as opposed to the Original Trilogy.
SW.com is relentlessly difficult to navigate when searching for a particular topic, but it was my first stop nonetheless, in hoping to find an official statement from Lucas on this matter... I could only find discussion.
God, I want this to be true.
I hope it is true too. It would be awesome to see the Star Wars movies in 3-D.
*thinks of the Anakin/ Obi-Wan battle* That would be awesome! I hope it turns 3D...:)
and the ep. 3 dooke battle .....or best of all - order 66 in 3-D!! :)
*sniffs at the thought of Star Wars in 3-D* So beautiful... (begins to cry with tears of joy)
i know also tears dropping off your cheeks
BUBBA FETT, your ideas for getting tickets remind me of Detroit Rock City. Except beating up little kids won't work. You gotta beat the $h1+ out of you and ur group of friends who go with you to see the movie, then blame it on someone in line.
ahhhhh, the excuse wouldnt work cos if they see you dong it, not $3x, i mean beating the crap out of the kid.....
I've been going to sw.com every day for the past few years, so far there has been no announcement. Just to let you know, since it is kinda hard to find old articles unless you've really spent a lot of time figuring out how to navigate.

This seems pretty new to me, I would think such an announcement would be on the main page.

Imagine the Pod Racing scenes in IMAX 3-D and THX Surround Sound...
The flames from Jango's flamethrower would come right at you...
The opening segment of ROTS, and yes, the Obi-Wan / Vader duel on Mustafar...
Flying down the trench of the Death Star...
The AT-ATs on Hoth...
Princess Leia in her metal bikini is why 3-D was invented...

HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Come right up, come right up, for the first time anywhere, you can have the 'Jango Fett Experience'".
Yeah, I remember hearing about this a while ago. I'm begining to think it won't ever happen. :(

Resurrecting this old thread to see if anyone has heard ANYTHING about Star Wars 3-D. ANYTHING at all? Google and Yahoo searches don't seem to lead to any discussion that is even remotely current. It must have just been a rumor, huh? One hell of a rumor.
Crap.
Oh, and while I'm here... since when do I have zero reputation and zero karma? Try telling THAT to the ladies, bee-yotch!
See ya in the threads!
I haven't heard anything about the 3-D saddly :(
Don't know how well it would go in the ROTJ, I could barely stand Boba falling into the sarlac in 2-D, how can I see that happen in 3-D?! :P Hope they make the movies in 3-D, as it would be very awesome. :D

I'd still like to cling to hope, but with everything Star Wars related that Lucas seems to be working on right now, the chances of this happening seem pretty slim.
This sucks, man.
I'm gonna throw a brick through the office window at POPULAR SCIENCE Magazine for writing that article.
I wouldnt mind seeing them in 3D, I have never been to an IMAX. We have one here but nothing good ever plays in it so I dont go.
i've never been to an IMAX screen either (nearest is in NYC). but if this does happen, i'll go to NYC just to see all the SW movies in 3-D. nothing too hard, new york is only an hour away.
Star Wars in 3-D would be awesome! though, wouldn't it? :D * asks for answers *
