Feared for a nasty reputation of digesting its prey for up to one thousand years, this massively huge beast lay nestled deep in the sands of the desert world, Tatooine.

Jabba the Hutt used the Sarlacc that resided in the Great Pit of Carkoon as both a form of entertainment and a way of executing his enemies.

The Sarlacc used by Jabba was thought to be one of the largest of its kind.

One of the Great Pit of Carkoon sarlacc's most well-known "victims" and also the only one to survive being swallowed by it was the bounty hunter Boba Fett.

Sarlacc's also seem to possess some form of telepathy as a video-recording discovered from Boba Fett's time in the beasts belly showed him reacting to things that weren't there.

FAQ: Did Boba Fett Die in the Sarlacc or Did Boba Fett Escape From the Sarlacc?

According to George Lucas, which was confirmed in a broadcast interview for MTV in 1997, Boba Fett died in the Sarlacc.

At various points in the creative process, he considered Boba Fett escaping, as revealed mostly in the book, "Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays."

On the DVD commentary for "Return of the Jedi: Special Edition," Lucas notes that if he had realized (how popular Boba Fett would become), he wouldn’t have killed him the way he did. ... The Fetts play such a larger role with the prequels, (that) Boba's death “seems even more like a mis-step."

In the "A New Hope: Special Edition," he also added the Sarlacc burping when Boba Fett falls.

However, according to officially licensed comic books and novels, which we call the Extended Universe, Boba Fett escaped from the Sarlacc. Here is a record of those stories:

  • In "Dark Empire #3," Boba Fett confronts Han Solo and Princess Leia to say, "The Sarlacc found me somewhat indigestible."
  • In "The Mandalorian Armor," which is the first of the three "The Bounty Hunter Wars" books, we establish Boba Fett has escaped the Sarlacc days after the battle, thanks to Dengar, Neelah, and Kuat of Kuat.

At Star Wars Celebration VI in 2012, George Lucas was recorded without his knowledge at an exhibit of Boba Fett fan-made helmets. In that video and our news report, Lucas says Boba Fett did not die.

On July 16, 2014, J.W. Renzler (Lucasfilm historian) publicly comments that George Lucas confirms Boba Fett survives the Sarlacc. This is the first public mention since the now Disney-owned Lucasfilm has decided the Extended Universe is not canon. It's yet to be known if the new canon storyline is going to follow through with Lucas' personal opinions.
