Star Wars Holiday Special

Anniversary: "Star Wars Holiday Special" Premiered — November 17, 1978
2025-08-08T23:17:09-07:00

Summary

The animated debut for Boba Fett originally aired on CBS one night only (8:00-10:00 PM EST).

The 9 minute cartoon is called "The Faithful Wookiee." Nelvana animated the piece in about 6 to 8 weeks.

For years, fans could only see it afterwards on bootlegged VHS tapes until a 2011 official release. To find the cartoon on the official disc release back in 2011 on the The Complete Saga Blu-ray, play the second bonus disc (archives for Episodes IV - VI). From the main menu, click "Episode V," then "Pursued by the Imperial Fleet," then "The Collection," then "Boba Fett Prototype Costume," and then on the right side menu "First Look."

As of 2021, it was added to Disney+ with the evolved title of "The Story of The Faithful Wookiee."

Credits

  • Directors (live action): David Acomba (who commissioned the animation but had creative differences overall and left mid-production) and Steve Binder (who finished the job)
  • Character Design and Storyboards: Clive Smith
  • Model Sheet: Frank Nissen
  • Animator: John Celestri (Boba Fett and Chewbacca scenes)
  • Voice: see below

No voice actor listed in Boba Fett's first appearance, but in 2025 we confirmed with Nelvana's Clive Smith who worked on the cartoon personally that it was Don Francks. "Yes it was the late Don Francks, a wonderful multi-talented friend. Actor and Jazz singer. Miss him very much," he shared with BFFC in May 2025. Previously, Cree Summer, the daughter of Don Francks, also told Great Big Story that Don was the first voice of Boba Fett. IMDb and Nerf-Herders-Anonymous also think it was Francks.

According to IMDb Trivia, Acomba "also commissioned the animated segment featuring Boba Fett."

Animation Sketch, Boba Fet, and White Armor

According to the original script (draft 4, dated 6/19/1978), the Boba Fett cartoon was originally titled "Animation Sketch."

Boba Fett's name was also spelled Boba Fet, which matches some Joe Johnston designs circa 1978.

The opening of the script mentions Boba wearing a white spacesuit. In pre-production, Fett's armor was originally all-white.
