Topic: Pirates and other stereotypes

Thanks to Hollywood, many stereotypes have been created. Please post any others that you can think of.

Pirates had no reason to keep pet monkeys or parrots around unless they were going to sell them. Not all pirates were cruel people. Black Beard was not a great pirate, as he only captured less than thirty ships. Black Bart (Barthalomew Roberts) captured four-hundred fifty six ships, and he was religious, and hated cruelty. Pirate captains did not always wear tricorner hats.

Ninja typicly disguised themseves as gardners and the like. When they did wear costumes, they usualy used Noh costumes. When throwing knifes, the knives would spin, not go perfectly straight. They did not use nunchucks. Ninja did have honor.

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

How do you know ninja never used nunchucks? I mean, its possible. And Parrots and Monkeys can keep a person company.

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

Okay, know this probably doesn't count since zombies don't exist, but, how come they always walk, hands straight out, and only go, "Uhg." and are so stupid?

Blackbeard did infact take hostages, mostly head honchos in local government, and trade them for medicince for his crew. But, like you said, he wasn't the greatest.

Dumb, sexy blondes. I know two blondes that are, infact, smarter than just about anybody I know. Straight A students, and one, is probably headed for a Noble prize just knowing how smart she is. Grace, the future Nobel prize winner, can do Math in her head quicker than one person can blink, and I, a brown head, can't even begin to understand Trig. And she's taking advanced Trig. Kara, the other blonde, is as cool as al get out, she loves Mandalorians, and is learning Mando'a just because I am, she far from dumb.

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

The stereotype that woman are naturally weaker than men. I've gone to tournaments before and the usual winners are girls, in Forensics acting there's always a girl in the finals.

And nunchuks woulnd't work for a ninja because they're useless. Especially if you're going to assassinate someone.
Just go and beat them in the head enough times they might keel over could be one of the worst plan ever concieved.

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

The stereotype of some men believing that women are alive only to raise children and then the're useless. That's 100%wrong because we need women as much as they need us to perform the..erm...ritual(doh!)to have new humans on this world.I don't think we should even say this because it's clear:No women,no children. No men no children.Men+Woman=Children.It's pretty clear to me.

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

"Voodoo" priests/ priesteses created a poison that enters the user in a death-like state. The priest/ priestes then digs the victim up, and uses him/her as a minion.

Frankenstein's monster and Dracula are almost always dippicted in a manor that I do not have to discribe. In horror movies the African-American is usually the first to die. Also, knights (especially the final batch of the Knights Templar) were not all good people. The Freemasons do charitable work, and are not evil.

Fetterthanyou, I think that the nunchuck was a Chinese weapon. Most pirates probably did not care if they had company.

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

I dunno if this counts or not, but what about cavemen living with dinosaurs. It never happened. Just like t-rex never hunted mammoths.

And Native Americans in old western films. They were usually portrayed as savages. When they weren't "bad" they were a sidekick type along the lines of Tonto.

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

One good stereotype is that vikings never had horns on their helmets, it was just a mith.

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

Yes, I hate how Frankenstien looks onscreen. He wasn't this big bad evil monster at all, he's a very sad character who just needed a little love.

Then again, he tossed that girl in the well...

The Stereotype that Irish people get drunk and fight everyone in sight... wait, that ones true tongue. But seriously my whole family is of irish descent and nobody at our reunions gets drunk (or fights for that matter).

And why wouldn't pirate captains need company? I know they have a crew, but alot of alone time was spent in their quarters. And a parrot could seem like another person because of its speach.

And also i realize that nunchucks may not be the most silent and graceful weapon, but things did not always go according to plan. Plus if you know what you are doing with a real nunchuck, it only takes 1 hit to the head. (They are extremely dangerous).

He's amazingly intellectual.

Yep that is true nunchucks can be very deangerous weapons.

What about the stereotype of excellent bounty hunters falling into pits and having their heads chopped off eh? tongue

I'm smiling because they havn't found the bodies yet. :)

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

The sidekick never gets the girl. Ever. I mean, I'd rather end up with the clumsy, funny idoit, than the 8 foot tall brick.

The dog always dies. Shiloh, Old Yeller(sp?), etc.

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

Well, I've never seen any of the Batman and Robins. And, go him then, he proved me wrong. ONE sidekick got the girl.

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

That movie sucked though!

There's only one Return, and it ain't of the King... It's of the Jedi.

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

Did it? the only Batman movie that I've seen is the most recent one, I thought it was pretty good.

Not sure if this is a stereotype, but most of the time, the bad has a cat. Has anybody else noticed this?

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

But it's cool for the badguy to have cat!

Batman Begins was good... as was the original and second movies. Forever was alright. Batman and Robin sucked though!

There's only one Return, and it ain't of the King... It's of the Jedi.

Re: Pirates and other stereotypes

Never saw Begins. I saw the older ones, plus the really-really old one with "pow" and stuff in bubbles onscreen, and Forever (which is probably my favorite). And I saw Batman and Robin (the one wit Ivy and Frost right?) and it was awful.

And, yeah, it's cool for the badguy to have a cat. big_smile
