Topic: Racing and other Sportastic things

It is Sunday and for me that means only one thing... RACE DAY!

No I do not follow Nascar, but INDY CAR racing. I am excited this season, especially with last weeks historic victory in Japan. ( Danica Patrick was the first woman to win a professional open wheel event!) Next month is the Indianapolis 500, the only other thing besides Star Wars to get me super excited to the point of hyperventalation.

This being the case I thought it could be intersesting to talk about our favorite sports and so forth. What do you guys like?

Lol, found this topic funny considering I just created the Nascar subject a little while ago tongue  guess this is different since this talks about other sports too wink  well, obviously I'm a Nascar fanatic and I like the grand prix racing too.  Aside from that, I love all sports that deal with horses, and tennis is always a fun game. big_smile

Racing isn't a sport be cause the divers are not athletes.

Re: Racing and other Sportastic things

Racing is a sport because it follows a defined set of rules.  Dance in its entirety isn't a sport but competitive dance is.

Sorry, just a debate I've had with some friends.  I also really like baseball.  Been my sport since the age of 5.  That's my favourite to play not necessarily to watch.  I love watching football (strictly NFL mind you), hockey (the new Canuck general manager better do something good), and as before mentioned I enjoy Nascar.

Re: Racing and other Sportastic things

I am not sure about how things are in nascar completely but in Indy Car racing drivers need to be quite fit. Many of them train by running, cycling and competing in triathalons. (Tony Kanaan, Tomas Sheckter for example.) If you are out of shape your body can't handle the g- forces excerted when driving and turning at those speeds. (200+ MPH). Plus there is actually a lot of work that needs to be done while accelerating breaking and clutching. That too takes stength. (I could not handle this because driving in stop and go traffic hurts my knee after 2 min.) There are no power steering or breaks. This is up to the driver. Then muliply this by say the 500 miles the driver has to do this to finish the race let alone win the event.  Yes it is a sport.

Hockey is also super.

Re: Racing and other Sportastic things

Although I am not a big fan of Nascar either but it is true that they have to be in good shape too. I read about a woman who competes in Nascar from"Muscle and Fitess:Hers". she is lifting weights to help develop strength for the SPORT.

I completely agree.

I enjoy watching F1, rallying and the motorbikes (the superbikes and GP)

I enjoy watching the winter Olympics as well. Some of those sports are just mad big_smile

LOL due to Devil Boy liking watching football (soccer) I have grew to tolerate having it on the TV (I used to like it when I was a child though)

Winter Olympics coming to my home town.  Booyah.  Team Canada shall rule the world.  That's in hockey of course.  The only thing we seem to be good at.  big_smile

Re: Racing and other Sportastic things

Well being in another country we don't have NASCAR. Indy Car visits every so often but I tend to follow the V8 Supercars and love the ARC (Australian Rally Championship) and WRS (World Rally Championship).

Also drivers are athletes you have to be very fit to drive a car for so long. Try driving a go-kart for half an hour, it's a lot more physical then you'd think.

Re: Racing and other Sportastic things

Yeah Indy has the Surfer's Paradise race this year big_smile Plus i can think of at least two drivers from that area of the globe, Scott Dixon (boo I don't like him) is from New Zealand and Ryan Briscoe is Austrailan.

Anybody can drive around in a circle, crash, and go over 100 mph, in a car.

Perhaps if its 101 mph and there is no one else on the track. Indy cars can be as fast as 240 mph! Thats like twice the speed my car can go, and most average cars. Plus the cars aren't built to handle the way our street cars do.  Plus there are at least 20 other drivers in cars driving 200 mph in a limited amount of space all trying to be the first one. Its not easy. Has anyone heard stories about the New Jersey Turpike? Thats dangerous and takes skill too, and thats driving thats not offically racing.
