Re: 300

I haven't seen 300, but from the sounds of it, it's pretty good.

Re: 300

One of the greatest movies I have ever seen in theaters. The style was amazing because it was based off Frank Miller's comic, and I believe he produced it also. And since Sin City rocked, of course 300 would follow in its footsteps.

Oops.  Sorry.  How about amazingly good?  I meant the compliment in a postitive sense, but I don't think I did the film justice....

Oh I didn't mean that you meant it negatively, merely that it was, well, it's difficult to describe how good it was.

Re: 300

Was I the only one who was watching this and thought about the similarities between Spartan and Mandalorian culture?  I wonder if Karen Traviss used Spartan culture as part of her basis in designing what the Mandalorian culture would be like, for her books?

Re: 300

I thought that too, about the Mandalorian thing. I think we have a thread for that in General, though I guess it's more of a vs thread I think.

Re: 300

I thought the beginning (with the exception of the bit where he yelled "this Is Sparta" and kicked those guys into the well) was completely crap.

But then it got to the war and it was really great, the music ruled and yeah.
I'd give it a 7/10

Well it wouldn't make any sense to start the movie in the middkle of the war. The build up is part of the movie, and I found it quite cool. But you are definately spot on by thinking the war was the greatest part of the movie. I just feel that the look at the civilization was awesome too.

Ha, those Persians got owned in that pit.

Re: 300

I dunno, I read the comic before I watched the movie (twice, so far), and the movie kinda lacks suspense. The sub-plot with Queen Gorgo only serves for downtimes, that are misplaced in that movie - not to mention nothing like that was in the comic. I'd rather have seen Ephialtes handled like he was in the comic (in the movie he just threw his spear down the rock), because this way, you don't really know what "this cripple" is doing in the movie (if you don't know the comic). The addition of the captain's son was imho one of the only additions that I liked... the other variations from the comic rather bugged me. On the other hand, I'm sure we'll see fan-edits of that movie that cut all non-comic parts once the DVD's out.

I know this sounds kinda like I didn't like the movie; it's not. The action scenes and visuals are among the best to see in a movie, and safe for the points mentioned above, this was indeed the comic, just in motion. Every single frame of the movie is an incredible artistic piece of its own, it's just stunning.

Overall, I think the storytelling could be handled better, but everything else couldn't have been done better by anyone else.
