Fan Spotlight: SugarBot Cosplay as Mythos Boba Fett

Updated May 18, 2016 12:55 am • Published May 18, 2016
Written by • Filed under Community

This fan spotlight is part of a series focusing on cosplayers who exemplify qualities in creativity, community-building, and craftsmanship.

What is your name/alias and who are you cosplaying as?

SugarBot Cosplay is my alias and this build is based on the Mythos Boba Fett figure by Sideshow Collectibles.

Why Boba Fett and why the Mythos Boba Fett in particular?

I love his allure and the way other characters talk about him. In "The Bounty Hunter Code," we learn a lot, how careful he is, how skilled he is and how much respect he's earned from other hunters. Also, the design is simply fantastic. I wanted to stay true to the design and do very little in terms of converting it to a feminine aesthetic.

What's your favorite part of the costume?

sugarpot-mythos-boba-fett-knees-tn

The painting. It's my passion. I'm also an illustrator and refinish furniture so all those techniques and products were used on this build. It got super messy, but it was worth all the chemical exposure haha.

What has been one of your most memorable experiences (so far) as this character?

I felt a bit intimated by all the amazing kits out there, I thought it wouldn't be well received. But, during my time at Calgary Expo, the Mandalorian Mercs pulled me into the fold and invited me to join a huge group shot with them! They were so warm and welcoming, it was wonderful!

You logged 330 hours in your Cosplanner app. Can you share with us some milestones from that effort and any benefits of organizing it out that way?

sugarpot-mythos-boba-fett-blaster-tn

The Cosplanner app is super awesome! The more I used it the more it motivated me to keep going. I saw the percentage go up and more green than red! Go go go, gotta go fast!

With a build like this that has so many tiny details, it's easy to get distracted when you're under pressure. This worked really well for me.

Your helmet comes from NME Props. How was it working with their base "bucket" and going from there?

NME Props is probably the most helpful, informative and kind company I've bought from. I normally make all my own masks and such, but their helmet looked stunning. They are also the ONLY company I could find that sells different sizes for their mercenary bucket. Girls often have the issue of looking like a bobblehead using other helmets as they're made for 6 foot men like Boba.

I've never even seen a prop this clean before, I didn't have to do a single thing to it and no filler primer needed! I was scared to add the wear and damage with my Dremel, it was just so perfect! Painting it was my favorite part, once I got over the fear of messing it up -- haha.

Sadly I couldn't finish this in time for Calgary Expo and Northern Fancon. A jetpack would have been amazing. The massive Mythos gun too!

What were some of your challenges to get your costume just right?

sugarpot-mythos-boba-fett-armor-tn

My biggest challenge was the breast cups -- haha. After creating my patterns, I traced them onto Worbla to get the proper curve over my mannequin chest. Then added Bondo, sanded til I couldn't feel my fingers, coated with resin and finally wrapped it in craft foam, closing the cells with heat. I like the way damage looks on foam and having a heated blade with multiple tips helps.

Who's behind some of your photos?

I'm trying to pull Christos Sagiorgis, the photographer, into the costume community because he's such an insanely talented and passionate person.

He's hooked, I'll be helping him to make his own costume soon. I'm really pulling him from his comfort zone. He's lit me in a ring of fire with flour thrown into it, he's laid on all kinds of swampy floors, bruised his elbows. I've had rotten leaves and glass thrown at me for effect and several smoke grenades burning all our eyes haha. He's very dedicated to what he does.

There's a shot of you with a Play Arts Kai Boba Fett cosplayer. Who's that?

The Play Arts Kai costumer is actually my hubby! We made our kits at the same time. His entire costume is hand crafted without a single template. We both got ours done in time for the con, outside of the jetpacks.

The smoke in the background is actually from a smoke grenade, that burned the eyes so bad haha! We both look pretty relaxed but internally we were screaming haha! His account is Adrian Dones.

What advice do you have for other cosplayers?

sugarpot-mythos-boba-fett-gauntlets-and-tools-tn

The Dented Helmet! They rock and have a ton of amazing resources! WizardOfLight for templates. Sadly I couldn't use many of the templates as they weren't scaled to my shape, but they gave me a really good visual of what I needed. Don't be afraid to ask questions. The Mando Mercs and 501st are amazingly helpful and wonderful people.

Favorite Star Wars moment?

That's difficult. I can't really pin a moment, but the final part of Fives story in Clone Wars brought me to tears. It was a wonderful arc.

Disney Infinity is Discontinued

Updated May 10, 2016 2:41 pm • Published May 10, 2016
Written by • Filed under Collectibles

According to an official statement posted moments ago on an official Disney blog, Disney Infinity has been discontinued.

The Disney Infinity 3.0 video game and related action figure recently included Boba Fett. The game also added cool things like Slave I.

It should be noted that the inclusion of Boba Fett and Slave I were quite nice highlights of the release, which was otherwise fraught with timing issues.

The Sony "timed exclusive" was the only way to get him in 2015. Then, a wide release set for January 2016 was quietly changed again and again. Europe got him first, which led to a lot of confusion here in the United States. Only starting March 15, 2016 could fans in North America finally could get him in stores without a Sony bundle or paying high markup for international orders.

According to the industry trades like Ars Technica, which all clearly embargoed the story until the official announcement dropped, Disney is getting out of the game publishing business entirely, claiming a $147,000,000 loss.

"Return of the Jedi" Was To Include More Boba Fett, Says Former Lucasfilm Fan Rep

Updated May 5, 2016 10:48 am • Published May 5, 2016
Written by • Filed under Fettpedia

Jordan Zakarin, Senior Entertainment Editor of Inverse, shared a new spin on Boba Fett's storyline for "Return of the Jedi" when he interviewed Lucasfilm's first fan relations officer, Craig Miller, this last Monday:

"Originally Boba Fett was set up in Empire as a character, and the third movie's plot was going to be more about Boba Fett rescuing Han Solo and all of that," Miller revealed. "Boba was gonna be the main villain... That was set up, why he was taking Han Solo away, why there was a thing with him in the Christmas special.

"When George decided not to make a third trilogy, he completely jettisoned that story line, which is why in the first ten minutes, Boba Fett gets bumped into and falls into the mouth of a giant monster," Miller added. "So he took what was planned for the third trilogy, which was the confrontation between Luke and Darth Vader, and the battle with the Emperor, and that got squished down from three movies to one movie. And that became the plot of Jedi."

See their full article for more context and revelations from their interview.

While Miller worked for Lucasfilm when it was called Black Falcon, Ltd., we can't find any copies of Lucas' written outlines for the original sequel trilogy -- of course well before we got "The Force Awakens," which differed from the plan. We do know that Boba Fett wasn't even mentioned in the first typed draft of "Revenge of the Jedi" (the original title before being re-named) and only showed up later when co-written by Lawrence Kasdan.

Zakarin's article also cites Starlog #31 from February 1980, where Craig also provided some commentary on the record at that time for the science fiction magazine. Check out this early description of Boba Fett and some rumors about him:

Another of the new characters has the evil-smelling name of Boba Fett. They say he'll rival Darth Vader for sheer terrorism. Apparently, he's a remnant of the old Imperial Shocktroopers — who once made the Stormtroopers look like school-crossing guards. Then others say:

No, he was never a Shocktrooper; he has merely adopted their uniform as a symbol of his nefarious purpose.

(You may have actually seen Boba Fett before; he appeared with Darth Vader in the Star Wars Holiday Special on CBS TV last November.)

Boba Fett wears Wookiee scalps on his shoulder! (Or, alternately, dangling from his belt.)

The most interesting speculation about Boba Fett is that he is a bounty hunter who will work for whichever side pays him the most, and he plays both sides when he can get away with it.

Here's a rumor within a rumor: Boba Fett will be played by one actor, and his voice will be overdubbed by another — and even those in the Lucasfilm office do not know who will be dubbing the voice!

Not included in Inverse's article, some other trivia that we can add to this from official sources includes the "Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays," where it's noted George considered a fight with Boba Fett and Lando:

Originally George Lucas envisioned a fight between Boba Fett and Lando but eventually suggested instead that the power pack on Boba's back should be hit and thrown around, as if he had "a balloon on his back that got air out of it." -- Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays (p. 259)

George Lucas has also said on the record that he considered a different ending for Boba Fett climbing out of the Sarlacc. Here's our transcript of his remarks at 33:01 on the "Return of the Jedi" DVD commentary circa September 2004:

"In the case of Boba Fett's death, had I known he was gonna turn into such a popular character, I probably would've made it a little bit more exciting. Boba Fett was just another one of the minions, another one of the bounty hunters and badguys. But, he became such a favorite of everybody's that, for having such a small part, uh he had a very large presence. And now that his history has been told in the first trilogy, y'know, it makes it even more of a misstep that we wouldn't make more out of the event of his defeat, because most people don't believe he died anyway. I'd contemplated putting in that extra shot in where he climbs out of the hole, but y'know I figure that's . . . it doesn't quite fit, in the end."

Star Wars Day (May 4) has an unusually high amount of Boba Fett collectible releases this year, even though he's not in any of the recent films. We've put together a to-the-point guide to help you on your quest for any or all five bounties.

Please feel free to bookmark this page as we'll be updating it frequently, especially at 12:01am PST on May 4th with direct links to Disney's mobile and desktop sites (which sadly use differently URLs).

UPDATE: In the first hour of inventory coming online, we've had 1) an item sell out and 2) the website's database/processing functionality crash. Thee you have it, Boba Fett fans.

While this 6.5" Boba Fett figure was released early in Milan, Italy and then throughout Europe, May 4th is the official store and online release for the U.S. and Canada. At 12:01am Pacific Standard Time, he should be online at DisneyStore.com. In the past, the Fett figures have sold out within 6 hours and never re-stocked, so the same could happen again.

Previous years relied on browser cookies, which could be deleted to vote again. This year, it's fancy and we can't quite figure out how they're doing it. There's some AJAX. There's Disney's API server. While deleting cookies can make you think you're voting again, there's a JavaScript warning that notes a "409 conflict" if voting twice. We're impressed.

However, this year the vote tally is visible before voting. (It was always showing after submitting one vote, even on repeat visits to the site.) This gives casual fans a way to see who's more popular already, rather than a standard blind vote. Maybe it's affecting the totals, maybe it isn't, but it's different this year and we're not fans of it.

Furthermore, as of 4pm on March 18th, we've seen some social media posts that the poll is hackable, seeming to accept more than one vote from the same person/computer without any errors. This suggests the poll is, like in years past, not an accurate popularity contest.
