Topic: G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

I gave in and saw the live-action GI Joe movie.
I got a better movie than I expected. Better in my opinion than the second Transformers movie.
There's a lot of name dropping and if you've never bought the toys or watched the 80's cartoon it's easy to sit there and demand to know why we should care about any of these characters.
Costumes were very true to the original, for the most part, with the Joes having more jumpsuit like costumes but the villains at the end at least had it down.

Spoilers...

Except for Cobra Commander.
It's pretty bad when you only learn that the evil scientist is Cobra Commander at the end of the movie.

Not a work of art but a good action movie.

i liked revenge of the fallen better. dennis quad was a good hawk though, and ray park as snake eyes was pretty cool.

Re: G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

....I don't know...I tried to sit through it and it was frankly quite horrible. Maybe it's because I'm too old for it or something. But watching that chase sequence in Paris didn't excite me. The thing about Michael Bay's films is that while it is silly you can step out of reality with it. In this, I think this director was trying to do Michael Bay but all I kept thinking was "gee. While the heroes and villains wage war in the streets of Paris, they sure are destroying a lot more and killing a lot more civilians in the process than trying to save them." And that hilarious scene in which the Baroness' car flips over and nearly blows up, they walk out with minor injuries. Granted, the point of the adventure movie is to let go of reality, but it was beyond the point of silly adventure into just stupidity. The background story to Tatum's character seemed typical and the shaky cam thing was rather formulaic feeling...as in: ok, this is a war scene, let's do the war camera look. Everything about it seemed, well, Transformers and Terminator were the summer movies, let's make this even more so! Incorporating every cliche of summer blockbuster formula and resulting in something rather forgettable.

Re: G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

I agree with RShehay. The whole film was ridiculous. The script sucked. Most of the acting was cliched, and sucked. They know nothing about what they were talking about, a particle accelerator does not zap things or even look like that. And they don't even know the definition of weaponize. The people who made this movie are dumbassess, and even for a kid's movie, it sucked. It must have been a kid's movie, everything was so childish. The villain? WTF? Ohh, scary, mad scientist. But if it was a kid's movie, why did the characters say sh*t so much? Wasn't this a cartoon? The special effects sucked too. Sure Transformers 2 had a really sucky plot, but the effects were high quality (ILM), the acting was pretty decent for that type of movie, and Optimus Prime kicked ***. And it had Megan Fox.
And I don't have anything against kid's movies, when they're done right. I like Up by Pixar. They always put a lot of work into it. The creators of GI Joe tried to make a adult kids movie and failed, epicly. Kids shouldn't say sh*t, and adults don't get into the whole mad scientist gay plot fail thing.

The Goonies is a kids movie and they cuss quite a bit in that too. Its not like its for very young kids, and anyways kids learn most (if not all) cuss words from their parents.

Anyways, I'm not going to see this. Aside the fact that I only see a few movies a year, this looks pretty bad. When you're adapting something from toys, cartoons, or comics (or any combination of the three) into movies, I should recognise it right away and in a good way. Not sit there and scratch my head when I see the title come up.

It's a PG-13, meaning it's not for kids. so they can say **** a bunch of times. back in the 80s, before the PG-13 rating existed (thanks to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), it was either PG or R, so PG movies would have the word **** in them a few times. but the style of making movies back then was different, so it was okay.

Stephen Sommers....Michael Bay in his dreams....

Transformers was still an awful movie

Re: G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

While they're raping the 80's and its cartoons I'm curious what the next toy-seller will be.
My hope is for Centurions, just to see how badly it translates from cartoon to live-action.

If I remember there is a rumour they're planning to remake Footloose.
I think I'll rank GI Joe as a generic movie as opposed to a bad movie.

Good point, and I agree. Also, I started the Goonies, and couldn't finish. Too many kids screaming.

Re: G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

I didn't think it was a terrible movie.  A few things though.  The voice on Cobra commander was terribly cheesy.

Really it wasn't my first choice but a friend and I got kicked out of District 9.  Apparently you have to be 18 in Canada as opposed to 17 in the States to see R movies.

That's one I'm wating to see.  As awesome as the original was, it didn't have a LOT of budget.  Would be really interesting to see that one re-vamped into a big budget production.  I love alternate reality material like that, and Red Dawn was always one of my favorites.  The old EA Games Freedom Fighters game was an amazing piece of work that could very well have been linked to Red Dawn - almost the exact same backstory and plot, just in NY City instead of the Colorado countryside

However, I'm just worried that they''ll butcher the original pro-America spirit behind the first movie...

But back on topic,

I havn't seen GI Joe yet, though I'm considering it.  I've heard a lot of bad press, and the idea of a movie that's based on action figures.....  but the concept has SOME merit, and some of the Cobra dude are waring some ripped off Army of Two style masks, so I'm really interested in checking those dudes out - might find some new inspirations for my own Army of Two creations

Hey I loved the movie. Also Star Wars was represented. Ray Park played Snake Eyes. If you dont remember who he is he played Darth Maul in Phantom Menace and Toad in X-men.
